In water drainage networks, whether these are residual or rainwater, alterations in the pressure inside the pipes occur during operation. These alterations can become significant, to the point of canceling the hydraulic closures of the sanitary devices with the consequent exit of bad odors to the houses. To avoid these fluctuations in the air pressure due to the movement of the fluids inside the tube, the sanitation facilities must be ventilated.

We have today two methods to ventilate the facilities:

Using a parallel network of ventilation pipes or installing aeration valves.

What is an aeration valve?

“Valve that allows the entry of air into the system, but not its output, in order to limit pressure fluctuations within the discharge pipe”
How does an aeration valve work?

The aeration valves open and facilitate the entry of outside air when there is a depression in the installation due to the discharge of sanitary elements.

The purpose of an aeration valve is to balance the pressure and avoid the dephonization of sanitary appliances, that is, the loss of the volume of water from the siphon.

When the discharge is finished, the valve closes, preventing the release of bad odors from the installation.

What parts is an aeration valve made of?

Aeration valves are simple, but effective mechanisms. They consist of a body made of plastic, a membrane made of treated silicone, a grid and joints to join the valve to the pipe in which it is installed.

Fundamentally we are going to find two types of valves: one with a large air intake flow and another with a small air intake flow.

High flow valves

These valves are used for both primary and secondary ventilation.

Normally a single valve provides the drainage system with the necessary ventilation to cover 5 floors. For buildings of more than 5 heights, a valve must also be installed every four floors.

“It must be used when, by design criteria, it is decided to combine the elements of the other ventilation systems in order not to leave the roof and save the space occupied by the secondary ventilation elements. A single valve must be installed in 5-storey buildings or less and one every 4 floors in the highest “

When aeration valves are used for primary ventilation in downspouts with secondary ventilation network, said aeration valves shall be calculated according to standard 12056-2 so that:

Minimum air flow (l / s)> 8 * Total waste water flow (l / s)

Small flow valves

These valves are used in tertiary ventilation.

“Tertiary ventilation should be available when the length of the drainage branches is more than 5 meters or the building has more than 14 floors”

Normally these valves provide the drain system with the necessary ventilation for a maximum of 5 devices. Imagine, for example, the case of a collector that drains a battery of 5 sinks in public toilets. This manifold would be sufficiently ventilated with the installation of a small flow valve.

When aeration valves are used for branches of ventilation pipes or sanitary appliances, they shall be calculated according to standard 12056-2 so that:

Minimum air flow (l / s)> 2 * Total waste water flow (l / s)
Aeration valve installation

High flow aeration valves are placed inside the building, on the false ceiling of the last floor, and care should be taken in the following aspects:

Install it vertically.

Position it so that air circulates freely towards the valve.

Install the valve 150 millimeters above the ground under the cover.

The pipe on which the valve is installed must be cut correctly, clean and without edges.

The valve is coupled to the pipe by pressure through the adapter. Use lubricant to facilitate coupling.

As for the small flow valves, the following is added:

The ideal position of this valve in a battery of devices is between the last and the penultimate.

Position it so that air circulates freely towards the valve.

The minimum distance between the top of the valve and the top of the pipe on which it is installed will be 100 millimeters.
